EU tells citizens to store three days of emergency supplies

In a surprising turn of events, the European Union has embraced prepper-style readiness, encouraging its citizens to prepare for potential emergencies by stockpiling essential supplies. This marks a significant shift from the traditional view of preparedness as a practice limited to survivalist groups on society’s fringes.

The EU’s latest directive calls for its 450 million citizens to maintain at least a 72-hour supply of crucial resources, including food and water. This recommendation comes amid growing concerns about various threats, ranging from potential military conflicts and cyber warfare to climate-related disasters and health crises.

“Today’s threats facing Europe are more complex than ever, and they are all interconnected,” said Preparedness and Crisis Management Commissioner Hadja Lahbib, while introducing new strategic measures for disaster response.

The initiative reflects a broader reconsideration of European security, particularly following the Trump administration’s push for Europe to take greater responsibility for its own defense, as reported by Associated Press.

While the Commission maintains it isn’t trying to spark panic, its recommendations present a stark contrast to its usual stance. The same organization that regularly warns about climate change and potential Russian threats is now advising citizens to prepare for emergencies in a practical way.

Lahbib’s guidance includes maintaining supplies of essential items such as food, water, flashlights, identification documents, medications, and shortwave radios. The commissioner’s vision extends beyond individual preparation, suggesting that “the EU should build up a ‘strategic reserve’ and stockpile other critical resources including firefighting planes; medical, energy and transport equipment; and specialized assets against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.”

This preparedness strategy aligns with similar measures already implemented in several European nations, including France, Finland, and Sweden.
