Mother kills children after taking mental health drugs
Listen To Story Above
The tragic case of mental health stigma and misinformation has once again surfaced following the devastating events in Byron, Wyoming. A mother, Tranyelle Harshman, took the lives of three of her children and attempted to end her own, while one child remains in critical condition.
Her husband, Cliff Harshman, attributes the tragedy to mental health issues, specifically citing “chemical imbalances” – a commonly repeated but scientifically discredited explanation for mental illness. Tranyelle had been receiving treatment for multiple conditions, including PTSD, postpartum depression, and general depression.
This incident bears striking similarities to the Lindsay Clancy case in Massachusetts, where a mother who had been prescribed 13 different psychiatric medications over just two months strangled her three children before attempting suicide. Clancy’s legal team is currently challenging the criminal charges, with some arguing that medical professionals should face accountability.

The pharmaceutical treatments commonly prescribed for mental health conditions carry significant risks. Popular medications such as Zoloft, Trazadone, and Seroquel list numerous concerning side effects, including aggression, suicidal ideation, psychosis, and paranoia. Despite these documented risks, pharmaceutical companies have not conducted clinical trials on the effects of combining these medications.
Wyoming’s Governor Mark Gordon has responded by advocating for increased mental health resources and funding. However, this approach may overlook crucial questions about the effectiveness and safety of current treatment protocols. The governor’s call to “double down” on mental health intervention fails to address whether existing treatments are actually helping or potentially causing harm.
The “chemical imbalance” theory, which Cliff Harshman referenced, was definitively debunked in 2022. Professor Moncrief’s research revealed no supporting evidence for this long-standing explanation of mental illness, and raised serious concerns about the safety of current drug treatments.
Transparency in mental health care has become a critical issue. Patients deserve complete information about their diagnoses and treatments, including the fact that there are no known brain abnormalities associated with psychiatric diagnoses, and that pharmaceutical companies themselves are uncertain about how their medications affect the brain.

Wyoming’s residents would be better served by a thorough examination of mental health diagnosis and treatment protocols rather than simply increasing funding. The state needs to ensure that patients receive accurate information and truly informed consent, particularly given that the “chemical imbalance” theory continues to be promoted despite its scientific invalidation.
This tragedy underscores the urgent need for honest dialogue about mental health treatment in America. When one in four adults takes psychiatric medication daily, and millions of children receive antidepressants and ADHD medications, the relationship between these treatments and violent incidents cannot be ignored.
The focus should be on investigating the actual information provided during diagnosis and prescription processes. If Wyoming residents are not receiving complete and accurate information about their mental health treatment, it represents a serious breach of medical ethics and responsible healthcare delivery.
