Republicans plan to remove BLM Plaza in DC

House Republicans are preparing legislation to remove Black Lives Matter Plaza from Washington D.C., according to sources familiar with the matter.
The controversial installation, located near the White House, spans two city blocks and features “Black Lives Matter” spelled out in massive 35-foot yellow letters along 16th Street NW. Initially, activists had added “DEFUND THE POLICE” alongside the mural, but this addition was removed during road maintenance in August 2020.
“The House Oversight Committee and the Trump Administration are working on delivering a number of reforms to make our nation’s capital safe and end left-wing pet projects. This includes addressing partisan abuses by the District government such as Black Lives Matter Plaza,” says House Oversight Committee chair Rep. James Comer (R-Ky).

The plaza, established during the aftermath of George Floyd’s death in May 2020, was implemented under Mayor Muriel Bowser’s administration. However, under the Home Rule Act of 1973, Congress maintains authority to override local government decisions. This power was recently demonstrated when Congress nullified a D.C. council law that would have reduced maximum penalties for violent crimes.
The initiative aligns with former President Trump’s commitment to eliminate what he views as woke ideology from federal institutions. While the committee has not disclosed other potential targets for removal, Republican leadership has consistently pushed for increased federal control over the city to address rising crime rates.
Yes! get rid of it! It should never have been there in the first place.

“Mayor Bowser and Democrat-run Washington, D.C. are focused on virtue signaling and spending taxpayer money to paint Black Lives Matter instead of the record spike in homicides, carjackings, and other violent crimes,” said Arkansas GOP Sen. Tom Cotton.
“Washington D.C.’s failures are a reminder why the city must never become a state,” he added.
