States sue Glock to stop gun modifications

In a significant legal development, fourteen state attorneys general and the District of Columbia have initiated legal proceedings against Glock, a leading handgun manufacturer, regarding the unauthorized modification of their firearms.

The lawsuit centers on the issue of conversion switches that transform Glock’s semiautomatic handguns into automatic weapons. Although these switches are neither manufactured by Glock nor legal in the United States, the attorneys general, spearheaded by Matt Platkin (D-NJ) and Keith Ellison (D-MN), argue that the company should modify their weapon design to prevent such conversions.

“For decades, Glock has knowingly sold weapons that anyone with a screwdriver and a YouTube video can convert into a military-grade machine gun in a matter of minutes,” Platkin stated.

This legal action follows a similar lawsuit filed by Chicago in partnership with Everytown for Gun Safety, a Bloomberg-affiliated organization, which is also supporting the current multi-state litigation. While the Chicago lawsuit acknowledged China’s role in producing these auto sears, it didn’t elaborate on the extent of China’s alleged involvement in distributing these devices across the United States.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation suggests this collective legal action might be an attempt to bypass the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. NSSF senior vice president and general counsel Larry Keane responded, “Attorneys General Platkin and Ellison, along with the other colluding states, are attempting to extend the frivolous claims that have no foundation in law and abuse taxpayer dollars to advance an unconstitutional gun control agenda.”

Keane further elaborated, “These claims are a devious manipulation of the courts by attempting to force a gun control agenda through judicial fiat and are contrary to the will of lawmakers and are expressly prohibited by federal law. This is the very definition of ‘lawfare’ and should be rejected by the courts.”
