According to Russian officials, who maintained close ties with Syria, Assad departed the country following discussions with opposition groups, leaving instructions for a peaceful transition of power.

The most prominent rebel faction is now led by Abu Mohammed al-Golani, a former al-Qaida leader who severed ties with the organization years ago and currently promotes ideals of pluralism and religious tolerance. He stands ready to guide Syria’s future course.
