A 20-year-old Pennsylvania woman is facing jail time after admitting to making false kidnapping and rape allegations against a man she deemed “creepy,” resulting in his wrongful imprisonment for over a month.

On Tuesday, Judge Stephen A. Corr sentenced Anjela Borisova Urumova to serve between 45 days and 23 months in Bucks County Correctional Facility. The sentence includes a year of probation, mandatory mental health evaluation, and an order to pay $3,600 in restitution to her victim.

After initially facing a potential 17-year prison sentence, Urumova entered a guilty plea in January to seven misdemeanor charges, including making false reports and tampering with evidence. Her false accusations led to the imprisonment of Daniel Pierson, an innocent man who spent 31 days behind bars before her confession.

District Attorney Jennifer Schorn emphasized the far-reaching consequences of such false allegations, stating, “Not only did this targeted false report impact the victim and his family in unimaginable ways, but there is also a profound ripple effect. A crime like this can shatter the community’s confidence in the system. It can jeopardize prosecutions of legitimate crimes of sexual violence.”

The incident began on April 16, 2024, when Urumova fabricated a story about being attacked outside a Redner’s supermarket. She claimed an assailant approached her from behind, pulled down her pants, and struck her face, leaving a bruise. She then falsely identified Pierson as her attacker.

During the investigation, Urumova admitted to targeting Pierson because she had previously noticed him and his blue Ford F-150 pickup truck in the area and considered him “creepy.” The Middletown Township Police Department’s investigation, including surveillance footage review and cell phone data analysis, revealed numerous inconsistencies in her account.

At Tuesday’s sentencing, Pierson, 41, attended with his wife but chose not to make a statement, as the ordeal had been too emotionally taxing for his family.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Kristin M. McElroy commended law enforcement’s thorough investigation while highlighting the severity of Urumova’s actions. “In this case, she targeted an innocent man and accused him of one of the worst crimes a person can be accused of,” McElroy said. “I’m incredibly grateful for the work that law enforcement did in this case to get down to what happened, but it can’t change the fact that a man spent 31 days sleeping in a cell for a crime he didn’t commit.”
