Christians lead disaster relief while others move on

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene’s devastating impact on the southeastern United States, numerous communities across North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and neighboring states continue their struggle to rebuild. The storm’s destructive path left countless towns decimated and thousands without homes.

While the nation’s attention quickly shifted to the ongoing election cycle, Asheville-based photographer Matt Van Swol has maintained his focus on the region’s recovery efforts. His recent social media observations highlight the significant presence of Christian organizations providing aid throughout the affected areas.

Despite not being religious himself, Van Swol expressed admiration for these faith-based relief efforts. “I’m not a religious person, but I see Samaritan’s Purse EVERYWHERE in Western North Carolina,” Van Swol said. “They have literally been here for 5 months straight helping us and have asked for nothing in return. Say what you will about religious groups, but they 100% show up when it counts.”

To support his observations, Van Swol shared footage from a local news broadcast featuring Samaritan’s Purse volunteers, easily identifiable in their bright orange shirts, engaged in various cleanup operations. The report included interviews with long-term volunteers and captured emotional responses from local residents receiving assistance.

The organization’s dedication drew praise from other social media users who shared similar experiences. “They were here for us after Ian as well in fact, they were one of the first year and last to leave,” one user commented. Another noted, “Samaritan’s Purse rebuilt my town after it was destroyed in a flood. FEMA did next to nothing. A bunch of other church groups came in and did good work. We also helped ourselves and our neighbors.”
