Congressional Republicans Move To Counter Biden Israel Arms Restrictions

Republican members of Congress are working to counter recent restrictions on arms shipments to Israel announced by the Biden administration. The effort comes less than a week after President Joe Biden said that further aid may be restricted to Israel depending on their planned attack on the last major Hamas stronghold of Rafah.

House GOP members plan a vote to try to block Biden’s halt to aid as soon as next week. The move came after Congress passed a major aid package to Israel amid its current war against the Hamas terrorist group.

The members backed the Israel Security Assistance Support Act, which would prevent the White House from holding aid that Congress approved. It would also require such weapons to be shipped within 15 days.

The House Oversight Committee launched an investigation into the Biden administration’s decision. Their efforts were also joined by 26 House Democrats, who signed onto a letter expressing their deep concerns “about the message the Administration is sending to Hamas.”

Following the president’s comments the Israeli war cabinet approved an operation against Rafah, which Biden previously called a “red line.” The Israeli military secured areas around the city, including a major border crossing.

The president’s actions also inspired other actions on Capitol Hill, including a new effort to impeach him.

Rep. Cory Mills introduced the articles of impeachment against the president, accusing Biden of violating his oath to “faithfully execute the office of President and to uphold the Constitution.”

Mills accused the president of “abusing the powers of his office by soliciting a ‘quid pro quo’ with Israel while leveraging vital military aid for policy changes.”

“This egregious action not only compromised the credibility of the United States but also undermined the interests of our longstanding ally, Israel. Therefore, President Biden’s conduct warrants impeachment, trial, removal from office and disqualification from holding any future office under the United States,” said Mills.

The impeachment articles are similar to those drafted against former President Donald Trump after accusations that he delayed aid to Ukraine before the 2022 war.
