Cleveland Clinic Remove Race-Based Health Center After COMPLAINTS From Several Departments
Two weeks after a conservative group filed with federal civil rights officials, the Cleveland Clinic has stripped details of its health clinic for minorities from its website.
The clinic removed the name “Minority Men’s Health Center” from its website shortly after August 14. The change followed a complaint to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) by legal group Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty on behalf of Do No Harm, an organization that advocates depoliticizing medicine.
The complaint highlighted the clinic’s race-based “Minority Stroke Program” and its ” Minority Men’s Health Center.” From the archives of the clinic’s website, this was to address “minority health concerns” so that doctors could be better equipped at dealing with those disparities in minority populations.
Some links that had directed users to the health center now go instead to kidney health resources, and references to the center itself remain on news releases and other portions of USC’s website.
The Cleveland Clinic, which still has a minority stroke program up on its website, works to “prevent and treat stroke in racial and ethnic minorities” also by using education to raise “stroke awareness among minority groups to decrease the incidence of stroke and improve outcomes.”
“We removed the Minority Men’s Health Center page from our website because the center has not been in place for several years,” the clinic told The Daily Wire Thursday afternoon. “Our Minority Stroke Program is still active and is open to all patients.”
Senior Fellow at Do No Harm, Dr. Jared Ross criticized the clinic for “race-based programming” and argued that their being racially-targeted is a violation of both The Civil Rights Act & The Affordable Care act.
While appreciating that reference was no longer being made to these programs, he echoed the fears of many in asserting his belief that there remained a genuine risk that it would open up again under another disguise.
“Anytime we have segregation based on race, it’s harmful,” Ross said. “We have a huge politically incentivized faction that wants to bring back segregation and it’s really unfortunate to go back to this idea of clinics for white people and clinics for black people.”
