The situation escalated when Vigil reportedly struck a child with an open hand when the toddler was blocking his path. After the child began crying, witnesses say Vigil directed a racial slur at the young victim.
Following a report from a teacher’s aide who witnessed the incident, the facility’s director contacted law enforcement. Further investigation revealed what authorities described as “many instances of harmful, degrading, and humiliating actions directed at the children, all two years old.”
The charges filed against Vigil break down into several categories: nine counts of Child Abuse Knowingly/Recklessly/Body Injury (Class 1 misdemeanor), 19 counts of Child Abuse Knowingly/Recklessly/No Injury (Class 2 misdemeanor), and 23 counts of Harassment involving physical contact (Class 1 misdemeanor).
