Democratic Louisiana Rep. Kyle Green was arrested for driving drunk with his three children in the car at 2:30 AM, then had the audacity to request “privacy” while he focuses on his “mental health.”

Another “Rules for Thee, Not for Me” Moment

Nothing says “responsible lawmaker” quite like allegedly driving drunk at 2:30 in the morning with your three children in the car. That’s exactly what Democratic Louisiana State Representative Kyle Green Jr. is accused of doing early Wednesday morning when he crashed his 2023 Honda Accord into a concrete barrier on the West Bank Expressway. Louisiana State Police reported that Green “ran off the roadway” before the collision, and thankfully, no injuries were reported in what could have been a deadly incident.

When troopers arrived on the scene, they quickly determined something wasn’t right with the elected official. According to the Louisiana State Police, officers “noticed signs of impairment and conducted a series of standardized field sobriety tests.” Apparently not liking where this was headed, Green refused to take a breath test – a move that forced authorities to obtain a search warrant for blood samples. Meanwhile, the three children who were in the car at the time of the crash were released to a family member.

Hiding Behind “Mental Health” After Endangering Children

Rather than taking full responsibility for his actions, Green quickly pivoted to the trendy excuse of our times – mental health. In a statement following his arrest, the lawmaker announced he would be taking a leave of absence from his legislative duties, saying: “I humbly request your continued prayers and privacy for my family as I take important steps to focus on my mental health and rehabilitation.” Privacy? After allegedly endangering not only his own children but everyone else on the road that night? The audacity is breathtaking.

Green now faces a laundry list of charges: first-offense DWI, three counts of DWI with child endangerment, careless operation, improper lane use, and a traffic attachment from Jefferson Parish. Yet somehow, I’m guessing he’ll manage to escape the full consequences that would befall an ordinary citizen who committed the same reckless acts. After all, he’s a lawmaker during the legislative session, and Louisiana law conveniently provides certain “privileged” protections from arrest for legislators during this time.

The Democratic Double Standard

Green, who has represented District 83 since first being elected in 2019, is a second-term lawmaker with an impressive educational background – Archbishop Shaw High School, Southern University, and the Southern University Law Center. All that education apparently didn’t teach him the basic wisdom of not getting behind the wheel while impaired, especially with children in tow. But then again, we’ve seen this pattern before – one set of standards for the political class and another for the rest of us.

As Green retreats from public view to “focus on his mental health,” one can’t help but wonder if his constituents will be as forgiving as he hopes. The fact that he has yet to respond to requests for comment beyond his prepared statement speaks volumes. While everyone deserves due process, the court of public opinion might not be as lenient as the actual judicial system often is with elected officials. After all, when you’re trusted to make laws for society, is it too much to ask that you follow those same laws yourself – especially when your children’s safety is at stake?
