Gaza hostages to be freed as fighting stops

A significant breakthrough in the Gaza conflict has emerged as Israel and Hamas have agreed to a temporary cessation of hostilities, which includes provisions for the release of dozens of Israeli captives who have been held in Gaza for over 15 months.

The unprecedented agreement establishes a 42-day pause in military operations throughout the Gaza Strip, marking the first major diplomatic success in the ongoing conflict.

During this period, both parties will engage in negotiations regarding the fate of the remaining 97 hostages in Gaza. Intelligence suggests that among these, approximately 60 individuals are still alive, including three U.S. citizens: Edan Alexander, Sagui Dekel-Chen and Keith Siegel.

The initial phase of the agreement outlines a prisoner exchange, with Hamas committing to free 33 hostages while Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners from its detention facilities.

The first group of released hostages will comprise women, children, elderly men over 50, and those requiring medical attention or suffering from illness.

While the specific identities of those to be released remain undisclosed, this development could provide crucial information about several hostages whose status remains uncertain, including the Bibas toddlers, whom Hamas claims have perished without providing evidence.

To demonstrate commitment to the agreement, Hamas will release three hostages on the first day of the ceasefire as a gesture of goodwill.
