Intelligence agencies secretly worked with journalists against Trump

A recently resurfaced video shows actress Claire Danes discussing the relationship between intelligence agencies and journalists during the Trump administration. During a February 2018 appearance on CBS’s Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the Homeland star revealed surprising details about the intelligence community’s shifting alliances.

Danes described an annual tradition where the show’s cast and creative team would participate in a “spy camp” in Washington, D.C. These gatherings, held at a Georgetown club, brought together intelligence officials, State Department representatives, and journalists for candid discussions about the political landscape.

During her conversation with Colbert, Danes highlighted a significant shift in dynamics that occurred in early 2017. She noted that when trust between the Trump administration and intelligence agencies deteriorated, these agencies began forming unexpected partnerships with journalists – a departure from their typically adversarial relationship.

The discussion emerged from Danes explaining how these real-world insights influenced the show’s storytelling. She detailed how the “spy camp” tradition originated through Henry Bromell, one of Homeland’s original writers, whose family connections to the CIA helped establish these unique networking opportunities.

“Every year, it’s different, right? We’ve been at this for a while, and the climate has changed. But this year, it was all about the distrust between the administration and the intelligence world. The intelligence community was suddenly kind of allying itself with journalists, which usually they’re not such good friends,” Danes told Colbert during the interview.

When Colbert suggested that tensions between the administration and intelligence community peaked in fall 2017, Danes countered that the strain existed earlier, though perhaps less visibly. She noted that the administration’s reluctance to fully staff the State Department was one indication of this underlying tension.

The interview clip has gained significant attention since resurfacing on social media platform X, accumulating over four million views within a day of being shared by user “The Chief Nerd.” The conversation serves as a reminder of the complex relationships between the Trump administration, intelligence agencies, media outlets, and the entertainment industry during his presidency.
