Russia attacks Ukraine after US supplies missiles

Russia launched a startling hypersonic missile assault on Ukraine Thursday, prompting former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to mock Western nations through a video post on X, declaring “So that’s what you wanted? You damn well got it!”
The aggressive move followed multiple Ukrainian and NATO strikes on Russian territory using American-supplied long-range missiles earlier in the week.
Russia is firing hypersonic missiles with conventional warheads at Mach 10 / 7,672 miles per hour. These are fully capable of holding nuclear warheads.

The escalation began when the Biden administration made a controversial decision the previous weekend, authorizing Ukraine to employ US-manufactured long-range missiles for attacks within Russian borders.
The Washington Post reported that Biden’s administration will allow Ukraine to use a powerful American long-range weapon for strikes inside Russia, supposedly in response to North Korea’s recent aid to Russia in the form of thousands of troops. Ukraine will be specifically allowed to use the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to hit targets inside Russia.
The situation intensified Tuesday when Ukraine launched six American-supplied long-range missiles into Russia’s Bryansk region. Russian defense officials reported intercepting five missiles with their air defense systems, while one caused damage to a military installation.
In response to Biden’s missile authorization, Putin enacted an updated nuclear doctrine, stating that any aggression against Russia or its allies by a non-nuclear nation supported by a nuclear power would be considered a joint attack.

The conflict further escalated Wednesday when Biden reversed his previous stance and approved antipersonnel landmines for Ukraine’s use. According to Reuters, American officials expect Ukraine to deploy these human-targeted weapons within its own territory, avoiding civilian-populated areas.
Russia’s hypersonic missile strike Thursday marked a significant retaliation in this rapidly escalating conflict.
