Special Counsel quits after spending millions investigating Trump

Former Special Counsel Jack Smith has officially stepped down from his position at the Department of Justice after concluding his investigation of President Trump. The former president wasted no time responding to this development with sharp criticism of his longtime adversary.

Smith’s resignation, revealed in court documents submitted to U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon on Saturday afternoon, occurred just days after his chief prosecutor Jay Bratt departed from the DOJ. Reports had previously indicated Smith’s intention to resign and submit his findings prior to Trump taking office.

In the early hours of the morning, around 1:15 am ET, Trump took to Truth Social to express his thoughts on Smith’s departure. “Deranged Jack Smith was fired today by the DOJ,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He is a disgrace to himself, his family, and his Country.” The former president added, “After spending over $100,000,000 on the Witch Hunt against TRUMP, he left town empty handed!”

Smith’s tenure as special counsel began in November 2022, when Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed him to investigate potential criminal charges against Trump. The appointment came just one day after Trump announced his 2024 presidential campaign. During his investigation, Smith utilized more than $50 million in public funds pursuing allegations against the former president.

The investigation led to multiple charges against Trump. In July 2023, Smith brought additional charges related to classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, including allegations about security footage deletion. Later, in September 2023, Trump faced four charges in Washington, DC, connected to January 6, including conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruction of an official proceeding.

As Smith exits his role, his investigation ultimately failed to prevent Trump’s political resurgence, with the former president poised to return to the White House in just over a week.
