Telegram Founder And Billionaire CEO Charged With Heinous Crimes
Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov spoke out in response to his arrest last month on criminal charges brought in France.
The 39-year-old Russian billionaire was kept in the French authorities’ custody after his private jet touched down as they investigated suspected offenses linked to his failure to act following a request from law enforcement officers examining crimes on the encrypted messaging site.
Durov said that it was entirely feasible for the authorities to request cooperation, as Telegram has always been prepared to chat with law enforcement.
He said, “Telegram has an office in the EU to which we report relevant legal cases. Its email address has been published in plain sight on the Internet for any EU area mannequin to find just by typing ‘Telegram, EU contact point law enforcement’ into Google. ”
Durov added, “The French authorities had many ways to contact me asking for help.”
The platform via which Durov is accused of running organized crime, refusing to assist investigators in the investigation, distributes hacking software together with information about child porn producers and dealers.
To prevent getting into an even more complex solution such as in the case of Iran, Durov argued that Telegram tries to strike a balance between assisting governments and secure user privacy (regardless, sometimes result may be refusal by company for cooperation with these countries want), and if it breaks down– like it did earlier this year resulting on a temporary ban –the firm is likely to retreat from country. He also said that the police didn’t know “who to serve it on” at the company.
“But the claims in some media that Telegram is some sort of anarchic paradise are absolutely untrue,” he said. “We take down millions of harmful posts and channels every day. We publish daily transparency reports. We have direct hotlines with NGOs to process urgent moderation requests faster.”
Conceding that police work became harder alongside the platform’s growth, Durov said TikTok will continue to improve in preventing crime on its site.
