Trump Receives Police Union Endorsement
A major union representing law enforcement endorsed former President Donald Trump earlier this month, in another sign that he is consolidating a significant base of support. The endorsement followed strong support by law enforcement for the former president in the 2020 election cycle amid rising crime and rioting.
The International Union of Police Associations (IUPA) announced its support for the former president earlier his month, saying in a statement that Trump’s “history of support” for law enforcement was “unmatched.”
IUPA president Sam Capral said that Trump’s “policies and actions were directed at improving safety in our communities and the men and women who provide that shield,” the release stated, adding that the 45th president “earned and deserves.”
He vowed the organization’s “wholehearted support.”
The endorsement also included considerable criticism for Democrats. During the 2020 election cycle, a number of officers criticized Democratic-run mayors and governors for their response to the George Floyd riots. Furthermore, since President Joe Biden took office, members of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have criticized the Biden White House’s approach to the border.

The IUPA president said that much of the Democrats’ “doctrine supports defunding the police; favors sanctuary cities, open borders and reduced accountability for criminal behavior.”
“The tragic result is apparent in those cities who have embraced these policies — the unfortunate forced businesses closures and plight that followed,” wrote Capral. “Roving gangs are terrorizing retail businesses, raiding them with absolute impunity, akin to a thousand years past — regressive rather than their own progressive ideology. They have not dealt with the consequences of their own failed strategies, while we have all suffered.”
The IUPA represents the first national law enforcement endorsement for the former president so far in this election cycle. The group also cited the decline in recruitment for law enforcement positions in recent years. Capral wrote that Trump “can and will address these issues effectively, while reinstating the confidence of a safe and prosperous United States of America.”
Trump received considerable support from police unions and organizations four years ago.
